The TV documentary The Secret Apothecary of Sisi & Co. delves into the ailing side of the powerful dynasty. At the heart of the documentary is the House, Court, and State Archives. Here, we explore the imperial court apothecary and trace some of the more curious remedies—such as cannabis cigarettes for asthma and cocaine suppositories for sleep disorders. Beyond that, we take a look at the medical standards of the early 19th century, revealing that good medical care was far from accessible to all segments of the population.
