City of Love @ BR

Vienna in the 19th century was one of the most modern and largest cities in the world. Consequently, it was also quite progressive in matters of love. The Spittelberg area was notorious for its prostitution. Prostitutes also offered their services at the city gates. The Congress of Vienna in 1814/1815 was the best thing that could have happened to Vienna’s love trade. The ‘Mutzenbacherin,’ an archetypal portrayal of the Viennese prostitute by Austro-Hungarian writer Felix Salten (1869-1945), became legendary. This documentary traces the erotic history of Vienna from days gone by.
