Seniors are significantly more active today than they were a few years ago. They stay healthy for longer and often, after retiring, they start a new, energized chapter of their life. This creates a socially dedicated group of people, who use their experiences and relative economic stability for multi-faceted projects and ways of living. And the financially strong group of active seniors has been identified by the economy as an important demographic.
In Norway the average citizen retires seven years later than his Austrian counterpart – and Norwegians also stay healthy for about seven years longer. Petter Iversen for example works as an engineer up to the retirement age of 70 and does not think of stoping there. Naturally, the working conditions have changed as well: at Siemens Norway employees over 60 have two hours a week to practice sport – during working hours. On top of it there is a financial raise and additional vacation time.
In her retirement, Annegret Klusmeier decided to start over in the residential project Allmende in Northern Germany: “Here we have reinvented the idea of a village. Living neighborly and individually, connecting living and working, being active ecologically and socially – all that is a priority for us.” Now there are first projects for communal living of elderly people and young families in Austria. “Aging Happily” goes on an expedition through various projects and different cultures’ approaches to aging.
